Russian Pedagogical Discourse in Intercultural Educational Field

Summer school arranged in Smolensk State University offers its participants to find out something new concerning one of the most called-for institutional communication spheres in pedagogical discourse during bilingual education (Russian and German / Russian and English). As the word “discourse” means live speech all the events of our school will help the audience to get the authentic view of those scientific, cultural and everyday concepts that they’ll discuss within the frameworks of school work.

The subject is naturally determined.

Smolensk State University is one of the oldest universities in Russia; it was founded on November 7, 1918 by the decree of the Council of People’s Commissars. It was just pedagogical till its renaming in 2005.

In our days the range of educational services is much wider, but teacher trainings for educational institutions of the Smolensk Region and other regions of Russia is still one of the main brands of the university.

From 2010 to 2012 Smolensk State University took part in the joint European project Tempus IV “Network Interaction of Partner Universities in Multilevel System of Preparation and Professional Development in the Field of Educational Management.” (159371 – Tempus – DE – Tempus – JPCR). Our lecturers and professors’ work involved in the project was greatly appreciated by the experts of the project. During summer school and other events we are ready to share our experience in the use of modern educational technologies, development and implementation of modular educational programs, studies in bilingual communication field, etc.

One more important reason to talk about this theme is importance of the national pedagogy in developing different aspects of the world pedagogical thought. We will also discuss it during Summer school work. Among Russian pedagogues, who brought the world-wide fame to Russian pedagogics, there were L.N. Tolstoy, K.D. Ushinsky, N.I. Pirogov, V.A. Sukhomlynsky, A.S. Makarenko etc. Modern concepts of Russian pedagogical discourse rely upon the positive experience of the Russian pedagogical school and at the same time include progressive ideas of international pedagogical theories in their work more actively.

The Summer school program includes lectures on the most urgent problems of Russian pedagogical discourse, practical courses, where we’re going to discuss different questions of lectures in detail and new points of the declared theme; project work systematizing received knowledge and providing off-line learning of its listeners (work with authentic materials, search for useful information etc.); Russian course, where the audience will be able to get communication skills in the field of the foreign language and the foreign culture; to get brand new strategies in studying Russian as a foreign language; cultural program allows to enlarge knowledge about our countries.

As research of many educational problems requires interdisciplinary approach, studying Russian pedagogical discourse will involve other fields of scientific knowledge, e.g. linguistics (“Science terminology of educational management in the Russian and German language worldview”), history (“History of pedagogy and education in Russia”), intercultural communication (“Intercultural management in the field of professional (educational) communication”), rhetoric (“Russian pedagogical rhetoric”), ethnography (“Use of ethnocultural traditions in education of Russian youth”), sociology (“Reforming the Russian higher school within the Bologna Process”) etc. These and other educational events of Summer school have the aim to show the audience specific character of Russian pedagogical discourse and at the same time to show, what is being done in Russia for the integration in the European Higher Education Area.

Project activity consists in development and presentation one of the aspects of Russian pedagogical discourse based on the information that the listeners have. We expect that the participants of the school will discuss the problem in the contrastive aspect to single out common zones and zones that are different in the key concepts of this field (“Teacher”, “School”, “Education”, “Socialization” etc.). The audience won’t be limited to the subject matter and ways of mastering the concepts. Folklore, literature, art, films, etc. can be inspirational sources.

Russian courses help the audience adapt to the new communication field. The programs are developed both for those, who have just started to learn Russian and for those, who want to improve their language skills. During the classes the audience will find out various aspects of Russian (phonetics, lexicology, grammar, syntax), study special features of different functional styles of speech (scientific, publicistic, colloquial (conversational)). We believe that among the main aims of this course is the demonstration of the most effective strategies for studying Russian, which can help our audience to be a success. Communication of German audience in Russian families must become a very important event.

Culture and educational events are made in such a way that the audience has three opportunities at once. Firstly, there is an opportunity to find out a lot of interesting information about one of the oldest cities in Russia Smolensk in the year of its 1150th anniversary. Secondly, our guests are sopposed to visit the capital of Russia, besides there will be virtual excursions (3D) to Saint-Petersburg. Thirdly, there are also pedagogical events; the audience of Summer school will visit the Makarenko museum, the Tenisheva estate, the summer theme educational camp of creative youth “Krylaty”, etc.

The following information can be very useful for our prospective audience:

The geographical position of Smolensk is convenient. In Russia Smolensk is “the Key City”. All the trains from East to west and from West to East go via Smolensk. It’s very easy to travel from Smolensk to Moscow and St.-Petersburg.

Smolensk State University has a great experience of work with foreign students. At the faculty of philology students from Germany, France and China study Russian. Our lecturers and professors regularly improve professional qualification; take part in theoretical and practical conferences, seminars about Russian as a foreign language, intercultural communication, use of brand new educational strategies in the course of training of special and language knowledge.

Our university often receives international delegations from different countries of the world. We have very close relations with the University in Hagen, for more than 15 years professors from this university have been giving lectures and seminars. The staff of the Centre for Distance Learning and other departments members of the university receive foreign guests, who have the required language, intercultural, social and communication competences.

During the Summer school work our participants will have their own curators, students from the faculty of philology, who can speak foreign languages and work in international groups.

Summer school will make use of all the resources Smolensk State University has at its disposal: hostel, academic building, library, free Internet. The university is situated in the centre of the city, the participants won’t have to walk for a long time to get to shops, cafes, museums, theatres, gift shops, gyms, the German and French reading-hall, Goethe-Institute Education Centre, “Circle of friends Hagen-Smolensk”.

Summer school work and the main events devoted to the 1150th anniversary of Smolensk start almost simultaneously. Our city’s culture and history are great. They are closely connected with the past, the present and the future of Russia. Participation of our guests in the cultural and eductional events will help them to open new perspectives for understanding the Russian national worldview. There are also different celebration events, such as sightseeing tour of Cultural Heritage Places, visiting museums, participation in historical occasions, meeting famous Smolensk citizens, etc.
